Background
Many products sold in the US require merchants to collect sales tax from consumers, remit those sales taxes to various government taxing authorities, and maintain proper and detailed record keeping.
You, as a Reseller, purchase products from ShineOn, and then sell them to your customers, this is the Life Cycle of an Order.
Wholesale sales from ShineOn to online merchants can avoid ShineOn charging you sales taxes, with Resale Certificates evidencing that merchants are selling the products to consumers. These Resale Certificates are required for each state where a merchant does business. The good news is that a new feature, powered by Avalara, is designed to simplify this process - allowing you to easily complete the Tax documents you may require.
Why I Should Consider This Feature
If you have ever made a sale in any US State, or plan to make a sale in any US State - you may have sales tax liabilities, including collecting sales tax and paying this to the various jurisdictions.
As a business, ShineOn must keep comprehensive records for each merchant, including up-to-date resale certificates for merchants that buy wholesale from ShineOn. This resale certificate informs us if sellers are wholesales, and thus do not need to be charged sales taxes by us.
The laws vary from state to state, and we would encourage you to seek tax guidance to ensure compliance.
This feature streamlines the entire resale certificate process, allowing you to quickly fill out and submit resale certificates easily for participating states.
Important Change In Policy
Please note that if you have not filled out a resale certificate for each state, on September 1st, 2024, ShineOn will begin collecting sales taxes on your ShineOn orders.
International merchants will be charged wholesale tax from ShineOn beginning on September 1st, 2024, for any orders they receive and ship within the US.
We encourage you to seek professional tax advice if you are unsure of your obligations.
How To Make Sure Your Account Is Set Up Properly
Sign in to your ShineOn account, and navigate to your Settings tab.
Settings > Account Settings
Here, you must have valid information entered before you see the Taxes tab. Enter accordingly in General information & Address information.
After a minute or so, refresh your page, and you should now see the Taxes tab.
It would be a good idea to correctly fill this information out, as your forms will pull automatically from here, and will make completing them much quicker.
On this tab, you'll see a form for each state. It's recommended that you fill out these forms for each state if you plan to sell within the US. The good news is, it's quicker than you would think!
Selecting a state will present you with your information. If everything looks correct, select Save and Continue.
Select Purchase will be resold, then Save and Continue.
Next, you'll see a page similar to this, though it's different for each state. If there are fields to fill out on the left, do this accordingly.
For: IS THIS A BLANKET CERTIFICATE COVERING MULTIPLE PURCHASES OR A SINGLE PURCHASE CERTIFICATE?
We recommend this option: Blanket certificate covering multiple purchases
After filling out the rest of your options on the left, selecting Save and Continue will automatically fill out the form on the right.
Once you've completed this for each required state, you're good to go!
