Creating a test order. (And a note on test payments)

Testing out orders and payments.

It's possible to place a test order on Shopify for you to review your order process. However there is some important information you should know before you attempt this. 

It is not possible to place test orders on Etsy, and buying your own products is against the Etsy terms of service.

Placing a test order on Shopify without following this process correctly can result in orders being sent through to our system as if they were real. You will be charged for these orders as normal on our side, as we have no way of detecting they were test orders. They will not be eligible for a refund as per our normal refunds policy. 

This process involves cancelling the test order after it was made. It is not recommended for stores that are currently open to trading as this may be disruptive. 

Let's take a look at how to do it.

How to place a Test order on Shopify.

To place a test order on Shopify, you will need to set up Bogus Gateway - a dummy payment processor to simulate the process of making a payment without any money actually changing hands.

However, when you place a test order, ShineOn will automatically sync that test order as if it was real - as there is no way for our system to determine the order was put through as a test.

If you do not wish to be charged for this order on our side, you will need to cancel this order before it goes through to production. You can do this by turning off automatic processing, and then cancelling the order afterwards. 

Here's what to do:

• From your ShineOn account, go to Settings > Account Settings

• Find Automatic Processing, disable it, and click save

Now any orders that come through to your store will need to be manually paid before they enter production, giving you an opportunity to cancel any orders before they are processed.

Now you can proceed to set up the test payment gateway on your Shopify Store:

• From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Payments.

• If you have a payment provider enabled, then deactivate it before continuing. Click Manage > Deactivate (this button also shows the name of your payment provider, for example Deactivate Shopify Payments), then confirm your deactivation.

• Click See all other Providers

• Select (for testing) Bogus Gateway from the list.

• Click Activate (for testing) Bogus Gateway.

• Click Save.
• Go to your online store and place an order as a customer would.
• At checkout, enter the following credit card details instead of genuine numbers:

Name on card	Enter Bogus Gateway
Credit card number	Enter each of these in turn to simulate different types of transaction: Enter 1 to simulate a successful transaction Enter 2 to simulate a failed transaction Enter 3 to simulate an exception (this generates a message indicating that an error has occurred with the provider)
CVV	Enter any 3-digit number (for example, 111.)
Expiry Date	Enter any date in the future.

• The order will now be processed, and within the orders page on shopify, it will display as paid and in progress.

• Head to Orders on your ShineOn account

• If everything is set up correctly and has worked, the order you just placed should be there, but marked as on hold.

• This confirms the Syncing process has worked and the test order completed successfully. You can review the order to make sure it is correct if you like.
• To cancel the order:
  • Release the order from hold by clicking Actions > Release Order

  

  • The order should now move to Awaiting Payment
  • Go to Shopify, click the three dots for more options on the order, and click request cancellation

  

  • Click the three dots again, and click Revert To Unfulfilled

  

  • From the Shopify orders list, check the box next to the order, click the three dots and click Cancel order

  

  • Archive the order, by clicking on the tickbox, then the three dots, and Archive order.

  

  • You must delete the order, open the order, scroll to the bottom and click the red delete button

  

  • The order will now cancel after a few moments.

  

• Once the order has been cancelled, re-enable automatic processing - Note that re-enabling this before cancellation of the order may result in being charged for the order.

• Return to Shopify, and re-enable your usual payment processor.

• And you're done!
